Planning a Uganda Safari: The Complete Guide
Uganda is often called the Pearl of Africa, and for good reason. In one trip you can trek mountain gorillas, track chimpanzees, cruise the Nile and watch lions on the savannah. Few countries offer such variety in such a compact area. Below, our team shares how we plan the perfect Uganda safari.
Top Experiences on a Uganda Safari
- Gorilla trekking in Bwindi or Mgahinga, home to around half of the world’s mountain gorillas.
- Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest, the primate capital of the world.
- Game drives and boat cruises in Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls.
- Rhino tracking on foot at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.
- Remote wilderness in Kidepo Valley.
How Many Days Do You Need?
3 to 4 days: gorillas only
Short trips focus on a single gorilla trek, often starting from Entebbe or Kigali. Try the 4-day gorilla trekking safari or the 2-day Bwindi trip from Kigali.
5 to 7 days: primates and savannah
This is the most popular length. It combines chimps in Kibale, game drives in Queen Elizabeth and gorillas in Bwindi, as on our 6-day Uganda adventure tour and 7-day primates safari.
10 days or more: the complete Uganda
Longer safaris add Murchison Falls, Ziwa and Lake Mburo, or combine Uganda with Rwanda, Kenya or Tanzania.
Best Time to Go on a Uganda Safari
The driest months, June to August and December to February, are the most popular for gorilla trekking and game viewing. The wetter months of March to May and October to November are greener and quieter, and some permits may be discounted. Uganda sits on the Equator, so temperatures are pleasant all year.
How Much Does a Uganda Safari Cost?
The biggest single cost is usually the gorilla permit, which is US$800 per foreign non-resident. Beyond that, the price depends on the length of your trip, your accommodation style (Signature, Classic or Adventurer) and the number of travellers sharing the vehicle. Tell us your budget and we will design a trip to match it.
Practical Tips
- Visas: most visitors apply online for a Uganda e-visa, or for the East Africa Tourist Visa if also visiting Rwanda and Kenya.
- Health: a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required to enter Uganda.
- Getting there: international flights arrive at Entebbe, about 40 km from Kampala.
- Getting around: distances are long and roads vary, so a private 4×4 with an experienced driver-guide makes all the difference.
