Rwenzori Mountains National Park

Rwenzori Mountains: The Mountains of the Moon

The Rwenzori Mountains rise along Uganda’s border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, and they look like nowhere else on Earth. Snow and glaciers sit almost on the Equator, while the slopes below are covered in moss-draped forest and giant groundsels and lobelias that grow to the size of trees.

The range, nicknamed the Mountains of the Moon, is protected by Rwenzori Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its highest point, Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley, reaches 5,109 metres, making it the third-highest summit in Africa.

Hiking and Climbing in the Rwenzoris

Margherita Peak expeditions

Summit climbs usually take seven to nine days on either the Central Circuit from Nyakalengija or the Kilembe Trail from the south. The final day crosses glaciers, so you need crampons, ropes and an experienced mountain guide. The climb is challenging, but no previous mountaineering experience is required for fit hikers.

Shorter treks and day hikes

If you do not want to summit, three- to five-day treks reach high camps and spectacular viewpoints. Day hikes from the park gates explore the lower forest, waterfalls and local Bakonzo villages.

What You Can See

The lower forest is home to chimpanzees, L’Hoest’s monkeys and the Rwenzori turaco, while the alpine zone features strange giant plants, glacial lakes and dramatic peaks. Birders will find many Albertine Rift endemics.

Best Time to Hike the Rwenzoris

The driest months are December to February and June to August. Even then, expect rain and mud: the Rwenzoris are one of the wettest mountain ranges in Africa, so good boots and waterproofs are essential.

Combine the Rwenzoris with a Safari

The park lies near Kasese, a short drive from Queen Elizabeth National Park and Kibale Forest. A few days of hiking pair perfectly with game drives and chimp tracking. Ask us to plan a combined trip.

It is a demanding, multi-day climb in wet, muddy conditions with glacier travel at the top. Good fitness and a few days of acclimatisation make a big difference.

This diverse range of habitats supports an extraordinary variety of flora and fauna, including rare species such as the Rwenzori lion, the endemic Rwenzori duiker, and a remarkable array of over 217 bird species, including the endemic Rwenzori turaco. As a key highlight among Uganda’s national parks, Rwenzori Mountains National Park offers an unparalleled trekking experience through its challenging and pristine landscapes. Traford Safaris Ltd specializes in guided treks that traverse the park’s scenic routes, including the popular trek to the Margherita Peak, the third highest peak in Africa.

Where to Stay near the Rwenzori Mountains

Every Traford safari comes in three styles: Signature (luxury), Classic (mid-range) and Adventurer (budget). These are the options we recommend most often; final choices depend on your dates and availability.

  • Classic: Equator Snow Lodge near the Nyakalengija trailhead, with views of the range.
  • Adventurer: Ruboni Community Camp, a community-run base just outside the park.

On multi-day treks you sleep in mountain huts along the trail, arranged with the trekking operator.
