Planning a Kenya Safari: The Complete Guide
Kenya is where the modern safari was born, and it still delivers the classic experience: big cats on golden plains, elephants beneath Kilimanjaro and the drama of the Great Migration. It also has excellent lodges, good flight connections and a beautiful Indian Ocean coast for relaxing afterwards.

How Many Days Do You Need?
Three or four days are enough for a Masai Mara safari from Nairobi, such as the 4-day affordable Masai Mara safari. Five to seven days add Amboseli and the Rift Valley lakes, as on the 7-day Kenya wildlife safari. With eight days or more, you can include Ol Pejeta or Samburu, or add gorillas in Uganda on the Kenya and Uganda tour.
Best Time for a Kenya Safari
July to October is peak season for the Great Migration in the Masai Mara. January to March is also excellent, with dry weather and good game viewing. The long rains from April to May bring lower prices and green landscapes.
Practical Tips
- Entry: most visitors need an electronic travel authorisation (eTA), applied for online before travel.
- Getting there: international flights arrive in Nairobi; scheduled light aircraft connect to the main parks.
- Combine with the beach: Diani and the Kenyan coast are a short flight from Nairobi or the Mara.

Kenya or Tanzania: which is better?
Both are excellent. Kenya is easier to reach and great for shorter trips, while Tanzania’s parks are larger. Many travellers combine them, or add gorillas in Uganda or Rwanda.
When are the river crossings?
Usually between July and October, although timing depends on the rains each year.
