Rwanda is small, safe and beautifully organised, which makes it one of the easiest countries in Africa to visit. Its headline experience is gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, just two to three hours from Kigali. Yet Rwanda also offers chimpanzees, the Big Five and lakeside relaxation.

How Many Days Do You Need?
Two or three days are enough for gorilla trekking and a Kigali tour, as on our 3-day Rwanda gorilla trekking safari. Five to seven days add golden monkeys, Nyungwe and Lake Kivu, for example on the 7-day Rwanda primates safari. Ten days covers the whole country, as on the 10-day classic Rwanda safari.
Best Time to Visit Rwanda
The dry seasons from June to September and December to February are best for trekking and game drives. Rwanda is green and beautiful all year, and the wet months are quieter.

Rwanda’s gorilla permit costs US$1,500 per person, so it is the main cost of most trips. To lower your budget, consider trekking gorillas in Uganda’s Bwindi or Mgahinga from Kigali, at about half the permit price. Accommodation ranges from simple guesthouses to some of Africa’s most luxurious lodges.
Practical Tips
- Visas: Rwanda offers visas on arrival or online for most nationalities, and many travellers are visa-exempt.
- Plastic bags are banned, so pack without them.
- Umuganda: on the last Saturday morning of each month, community work pauses most traffic until around midday.
