Bwindi Impenetrable National Park: Home of the Mountain Gorillas
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is where most travellers meet mountain gorillas for the first time, and it is easy to see why. This steep, misty rainforest in south-west Uganda shelters around half of all mountain gorillas left on Earth. It has also been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994.
The name is no exaggeration. Bwindi’s 331 square kilometres of ancient forest cling to ridges and valleys so thick with vines and ferns that trackers sometimes cut a path with machetes. Yet that same wildness is what makes the moment you find a gorilla family so powerful. A silverback feeds a few metres away, youngsters tumble through the leaves, and the forest goes quiet around you.
Below, we explain how gorilla trekking in Bwindi works, which sector to choose, what permits cost and how to plan your trip.
Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the best place in the world to see mountain gorillas. The forest protects roughly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, and more than 20 gorilla families are habituated for visitors. As a result, your chances of a sighting on a guided trek are very high.
Each trek starts early with a ranger briefing at the park office. Next, you walk into the forest with a guide, armed rangers and trackers who radio the gorillas’ position. The hike can take anywhere from one to six hours, depending on where the family slept. Once you find them, you spend one unforgettable hour watching the group feed, play and rest.
The four gorilla trekking sectors
Bwindi is divided into four trekking areas, and each one has its own lodges and gorilla families:
- Buhoma (north): the original sector, with gentler trails and the widest choice of lodges.
- Ruhija (east): high, cool and quiet, and excellent for birdwatching.
- Rushaga (south): the sector with the most gorilla families and the only place for the gorilla habituation experience.
- Nkuringo (south-west): steep hikes with sweeping views of the Virunga volcanoes.
Your permit is issued for one sector, so we book your lodge in the same area. That way, you avoid a long drive before dawn on trekking day.
Bwindi Gorilla Permits and Costs
A gorilla trekking permit in Bwindi costs US$800 per foreign non-resident under the Uganda Wildlife Authority tariff. Foreign residents and other African passport holders pay less, and UWA has announced discounted rates for some low-season months. The permit covers park entry, your ranger guide and one hour with the gorillas. Trekkers must be at least 15 years old.
For a longer encounter, the gorilla habituation experience lets you spend up to four hours with a family that is still getting used to people. Only a few permits are sold each day, so book early. Permit prices can change, and we always confirm the current rate before you pay.
Best Time to Visit Bwindi
You can trek gorillas in Bwindi all year. However, the drier months from June to August and from December to February make the trails firmer and easier to walk. The wetter months of March to May and October to November bring lush scenery, fewer visitors and sometimes lower permit prices. Rain falls in short bursts, so a good rain jacket is usually enough.
What Else to Do in Bwindi
Gorillas are the highlight, but Bwindi rewards a longer stay. Birders can look for over 350 species, including many Albertine Rift endemics such as the African green broadbill. Guided nature walks lead to waterfalls and forest streams. In addition, the Batwa cultural experience introduces you to the forest’s original inhabitants and their traditional way of life. Many travellers also add a few relaxing days at nearby Lake Bunyonyi.
How to Get to Bwindi
By road, Bwindi is roughly 8 to 10 hours from Kampala or Entebbe, so most itineraries break the journey at Queen Elizabeth National Park or Lake Mburo. Alternatively, daily scheduled flights from Entebbe land at the Kihihi and Kisoro airstrips near the park. If you start in Rwanda, the southern sectors are only about four to five hours from Kigali, which is why our 2-day Bwindi gorilla safari from Kigali is so popular.
