Mount Elgon: Uganda's Giant Extinct Volcano
Mount Elgon National Park protects an enormous extinct volcano on Uganda’s eastern border with Kenya. Elgon has one of the largest volcanic bases of any mountain on Earth, and its summit holds a vast caldera ringed by jagged peaks. The highest point in Uganda’s part of the mountain, Wagagai Peak, stands at 4,321 metres.
Unlike the Rwenzoris, Elgon can be climbed without technical skills, and its slopes are dotted with waterfalls, caves and coffee farms. As a result, it is one of the best adventure escapes in eastern Uganda.
Things to Do at Mount Elgon
Hiking to Wagagai Peak
Summit treks take about four to five days on the Sasa, Sipi or Piswa trails. Along the way you pass through montane forest, bamboo and heath into high moorland, before descending into the caldera with its hot springs.
Sipi Falls
On the mountain’s lower slopes, Sipi Falls tumbles down a series of three cliffs. Guided walks visit all three falls, and the views across the plains towards Lake Kyoga are superb. You can even abseil beside the main falls.
Coffee tours and caves
Elgon is famous for its Arabica coffee. Local farmers show you how beans are grown, roasted and brewed. Hikers can also explore caves such as those at Kapkwai.
Best Time to Visit Mount Elgon
The drier months of June to August and December to March are best for hiking, although showers are common all year.
