Planning a Tanzania Safari: The Complete Guide
Tanzania is home to some of the most famous wildlife areas on Earth. The northern circuit alone includes the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire and Lake Manyara. Add Kilimanjaro and the beaches of Zanzibar, and you have one of the world’s greatest travel destinations.
Top Experiences in Tanzania
- The Great Migration across the Serengeti, with calving in the south from January to March.
- Ngorongoro Crater, with black rhinos and lions in a giant caldera.
- Elephants and baobabs in Tarangire.
- Culture with the Maasai, the Iraqw around Karatu and the Hadzabe at Lake Eyasi.
- Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, the Roof of Africa.
- Beach time on Zanzibar after your safari.
How Many Days Do You Need?
Five or six days cover the classic northern circuit, as on the 5-day Tanzania Big Five safari and the 6-day Tanzania wildlife safari. Eight to twelve days allow more time in the Serengeti, for example on the 12-day Tanzania wildlife safari. Add three or four nights on Zanzibar for a safari and beach holiday, as on the 11-day best of Tanzania tour.
Best Time for a Tanzania Safari
June to October is the classic dry season, with excellent game viewing and river crossings in the northern Serengeti from July. January to March brings the calving season in the south. April and May are the long rains, with lower prices and green scenery.
Practical Tips
- Visas: most visitors apply for a Tanzania e-visa online before travel.
- Getting there: fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport near Arusha for the northern parks.
- Combine with gorillas: add Uganda or Rwanda for gorilla trekking, as on our 9-day Tanzania and Uganda tour.
