Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, and it is one of the most extraordinary places on any safari. Its walls rise around 600 metres above a flat crater floor of about 260 square kilometres, filled with grassland, a soda lake, swamps and forest.
Inside, wildlife lives at an amazing density. In a single morning, you can see lions, elephants, buffalo, hyenas and huge herds of zebra and wildebeest. It is also one of the best places in Tanzania to see endangered black rhinos.
A Day in Ngorongoro Crater
Crater tours start early. You descend the steep road onto the crater floor and spend up to six hours exploring, usually with a picnic lunch by the hippo pool. Lake Magadi often turns pink with flamingos, and the Lerai forest shelters elephants and monkeys.
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area
The crater is the centrepiece of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where Maasai herders live alongside wildlife. Nearby, Olduvai Gorge is one of the world’s most important sites for the study of human origins.
