Nyungwe Forest National Park: Rwanda's Ancient Rainforest
Nyungwe Forest National Park protects one of Africa’s oldest mountain rainforests, spread across the hills of south-west Rwanda. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023. Mist drifts through giant tree ferns, colobus monkeys leap overhead, and the forest echoes with the calls of chimpanzees.
Nyungwe is home to 13 primate species and around 300 bird species, many found only in the Albertine Rift. It is a rewarding addition to any Rwanda gorilla safari.
Things to Do in Nyungwe Forest
Chimpanzee tracking
Early-morning treks follow habituated chimpanzees in the main forest or in the smaller Cyamudongo forest. Sightings are good but less predictable than in Kibale, so allow flexibility.
Canopy walkway
East Africa’s famous canopy walk is a suspended bridge high above the forest floor near Uwinka. It offers an unforgettable bird’s-eye view of the treetops.
Colobus monkeys and hiking
Large troops of Angola colobus are a highlight. Well-marked trails also lead to waterfalls such as Isumo, and to tea plantations on the forest edge.
Best Time to Visit Nyungwe
The drier months of June to August and December to February offer easier trails, although Nyungwe is a rainforest and showers are possible at any time.
