Kigali City: Rwanda's Clean, Green Capital
Kigali is where most Rwanda safaris begin, and it deserves more than a quick airport transfer. Rwanda’s capital spreads across green hills and valleys, and it is widely known as one of the cleanest, safest and best-organised cities in Africa. Streets are spotless, motorbike taxis come with helmets, and the city’s cafes serve some of the finest coffee grown anywhere.
Kigali is also a city with a powerful story. A visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial helps you understand Rwanda’s past, while its markets, galleries and restaurants show the confident, creative country it has become. In this guide, we cover the best things to do in Kigali, how long to stay, and how to combine the city with gorillas and safaris.
Top Things to Do in Kigali
Kigali Genocide Memorial
The Kigali Genocide Memorial at Gisozi is the most important visit in the city. Its exhibitions explain the history behind the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, the 100 days of killing and the long road to reconciliation. More than 250,000 victims are buried in the memorial gardens. Allow two to three hours, and expect a moving, reflective experience. Entry is free, and donations support the memorial\’s work.
Kimironko Market
Kimironko is Kigali\’s busiest market and a great place to see everyday city life. Stalls sell fresh fruit, spices and vegetables, while tailors can make clothes from colourful African fabric within a day or two.
Nyamirambo walking tour
Nyamirambo is one of Kigali\’s oldest and liveliest neighbourhoods. Community-run walking tours lead you past mosques, barbers, small shops and street food stalls, and often finish with a home-cooked Rwandan lunch.
Art galleries and crafts
Kigali has a thriving creative scene. The Inema Arts Center showcases contemporary Rwandan painting and sculpture, and the Caplaki craft village is the place to buy baskets, carvings and souvenirs.
Coffee and food
Rwanda grows outstanding speciality coffee, and Kigali\’s cafes are a great place to taste it. In the evening, try brochettes, isombe (cassava leaves) and fresh tilapia, or enjoy the city\’s growing restaurant and rooftop bar scene.
Museums and viewpoints
The Kandt House Museum tells the story of Rwanda\’s natural history and colonial period, while the former Presidential Palace Museum near the airport includes the wreckage of the plane shot down in 1994. For views over the whole city, hike or drive up Mount Kigali.
Good to Know Before You Visit Kigali
- Umuganda: on the last Saturday morning of each month, Rwandans take part in community work, and most shops and traffic pause until around midday. We plan transfers around it.
- Plastic bags are banned in Rwanda, so avoid packing them in your luggage.
- Getting around: the city is hilly, so a private vehicle is the easiest way to explore. Kigali International Airport is only around 10 kilometres from the centre.
- Safety: Kigali is one of the safest capitals in Africa, and walking in central areas during the day is comfortable.
How Long to Stay in Kigali
One full day is enough to see the main sights, usually on the day you arrive or before your flight home. However, a second day lets you add a Nyamirambo tour, art galleries and a relaxed coffee tasting.
Combining Kigali with Gorillas and Safaris
Kigali is the perfect gateway to Rwanda\’s parks. Volcanoes National Park is only two to three hours away for gorilla trekking, Akagera National Park is about two and a half hours east for Big Five game drives, and Nyungwe Forest offers chimpanzees and the canopy walk. Kigali is also the closest international airport to Uganda\’s southern gorilla parks, Bwindi and Mgahinga.
Popular trips that include a Kigali city tour are the 3-day Rwanda gorilla trekking safari, the 10-day classic Rwanda safari and the 2-day Bwindi gorilla safari from Kigali.
