Amboseli National Park

Amboseli: Elephants Beneath Kilimanjaro

Amboseli National Park is famous for one unforgettable view: herds of elephants walking across the plains with snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro rising behind them. The park lies in southern Kenya, right on the Tanzanian border, and Kilimanjaro looms over it on clear mornings.

Although Amboseli is fairly small, at about 392 square kilometres, it is one of the best places in Africa to watch elephants up close, including some of the continent’s last great tuskers. Underground water from Kilimanjaro feeds green swamps in the middle of the dusty plains, which attract wildlife all year.

Things to Do in Amboseli

Game drives

Besides elephants, Amboseli is home to lions, cheetahs, hyenas, buffalo, giraffes, zebras and wildebeest. The swamps attract hippos and hundreds of bird species.

Observation Hill

A short climb up Observation Hill offers sweeping views over the swamps, the plains and, on a clear day, Kilimanjaro.

Maasai village visit

Maasai communities surround the park. A guided visit introduces their homes, dances and traditions.

Best Time to Visit Amboseli

The dry seasons from June to October and January to February offer the best game viewing. Kilimanjaro is often clearest early in the morning and late in the afternoon.

How to Get to Amboseli

Amboseli is about four to five hours by road from Nairobi, or a short scheduled flight. It combines naturally with the Masai Mara and the Rift Valley lakes.
