Kidepo Valley National Park feels like a different Africa. Tucked into Uganda’s far north-eastern corner, near the borders with South Sudan and Kenya, it is a vast 1,442-square-kilometre wilderness of golden grassland, rocky outcrops and distant mountain ranges.
Few people make the journey, so you often have sightings to yourself. Kidepo’s Narus Valley holds big herds of buffalo, zebras and antelope, and the lions that hunt them. Wildlife and Game Drives in Kidepo
Most game drives explore the Narus Valley, where water stays available through the dry season. Here you can see lions, often resting on rocky kopjes, along with elephants, buffalo, Jackson\’s hartebeest, oribi and Burchell\’s zebra. The drier Kidepo Valley to the north is the place to search for ostriches, cheetahs and other dry-country species. With around 475 bird species recorded, Kidepo is also a rewarding birding destination.
Culture: The Karamojong and the Ik
Kidepo lies in Karamoja, home to the pastoralist Karamojong people. A guided village visit gives an insight into a way of life built around cattle. In the mountains nearby, the Ik people live in one of Uganda\’s most isolated communities.
Best Time to Visit Kidepo Valley
The dry season from September to March is best for game viewing, because animals gather near the remaining water in the Narus Valley. The wet months turn the plains green and are excellent for birds, although some tracks become harder to drive.
How to Get to Kidepo Valley National Park
Kidepo is remote. The drive from Kampala takes 10 to 12 hours, so most road trips break the journey at Murchison Falls or Gulu. Alternatively, scheduled and charter flights from Entebbe reach the Apoka airstrip in about two hours, which makes a short luxury stay easy.
