The Buhoma Gorilla Families

Buhoma Sector, found in the north of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, is the birthplace of gorilla trekking in Uganda. This is where it all began in 1993, when the first gorilla family — Mubare Group — was habituated. Since then, Buhoma has become a favorite for travelers from around the world.

Today, the area is home to three friendly gorilla families: Mubare, Rushegura, and Habinyanja. Each has a unique story and personality that make trekking in Buhoma both exciting and emotional.

The Mubare Family – The Pioneers of Gorilla Trekking

The Mubare Family is the oldest gorilla group in Uganda. It was named after the Mubare Hills, where researchers first found them. The group was habituated in 1993, marking the start of Uganda’s gorilla tourism.

Led by a strong silverback named Ruhondeza, Mubare started with 12 members. Ruhondeza led the family peacefully until his death in 2012. Even after his passing, his legacy lives on. The family continues to thrive under new leadership.

Visiting Mubare feels like stepping into the history of gorilla conservation. The trek is not too demanding, and meeting these gorillas often leaves visitors deeply moved.

The Rushegura Family – Gentle Giants Near the Village

The Rushegura Family broke away from the Habinyanja group in 2002, led by a silverback called Mwirima. He wanted a smaller, calmer group, and his wish came true. Today, Rushegura is one of the most relaxed families in Buhoma.

They are known for staying close to the park headquarters, which makes the trek shorter and easier. Visitors often see them near the forest edge or even near lodges. Their calm behavior and curiosity make them a favorite among trekkers.

It’s common to find them grooming each other, eating wild fruits, or playing in the trees. Because of their gentle nature, encounters with Rushegura are peaceful and heartwarming.

The Habinyanja Family – Adventurous and Full of Life

The Habinyanja Family was habituated in 1997. The name “Habinyanja” means place with water, as they were first seen near a swamp. This group is famous for its adventurous nature and wide-ranging movements through the forest.

Originally led by Mugurusi, the group later split, creating the Rushegura family. Today, Habinyanja remains strong and active. Trekkers often enjoy watching their lively interactions and learning about gorilla behavior.

Because they move across large areas, the trek can be longer. However, the reward is worth it  you’ll witness incredible moments and deep social bonds.
