When Should You Start Planning Your 2027 African Safari?

If you are thinking about an African safari in 2027, you do not need to wait until the year begins to start planning. In fact, starting early gives you more time to choose the right destination, build a realistic budget, compare safari styles and secure activities that have limited availability.

For an East Africa safari, your planning timeline will depend on your destination, travel dates, budget and activities. A gorilla trekking safari, for example, needs different preparation from a short wildlife safari in Kenya or Tanzania.

So, when should you start planning?

12–18 Months Before Your Safari: Start With the Big Decisions

For a 2027 safari, this is a good time to decide what kind of trip you actually want.

Start by asking yourself:

  • Which country or countries do I want to visit?
  • How many days can I travel?
  • What is my approximate budget?
  • Do I want wildlife, primates, culture or a combination?
  • Am I travelling alone, as a couple, with friends or with family?
  • Do I prefer budget, mid-range or luxury accommodation?
  • Do I want a private safari or a shared safari?

You do not need a complete itinerary yet.

At this stage, the goal is to understand what type of safari fits your time and budget.

Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya or Tanzania?

East Africa offers very different safari experiences.

Uganda can combine gorilla trekking, chimpanzees, savanna wildlife and cultural experiences.

Rwanda works well for gorilla trekking, chimpanzee trekking, Akagera wildlife and Lake Kivu.

Kenya is well known for destinations such as the Maasai Mara, Amboseli and Samburu.

Tanzania offers major wildlife destinations including Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire, as well as access to Zanzibar for travellers who want a beach extension.

You can also combine countries if you have enough time.

9–12 Months Before: Build Your Safari Budget

Once you know what type of trip you want, start working out what it will realistically cost.

Your safari budget may include:

  • Accommodation
  • Safari vehicle and driver-guide
  • Park entry fees
  • Gorilla or chimpanzee permits
  • Game drives
  • Boat trips
  • Cultural experiences
  • Meals
  • Airport or border transfers
  • Internal flights where required
  • Travel insurance
  • Visa costs where applicable
  • Tips and personal spending

Do not focus only on the advertised daily safari price.

For example, a gorilla safari can cost more because the trekking permit itself is a significant part of the trip cost.

Start a Safari Savings Plan

If you are travelling in late 2027, you could divide your expected safari cost into monthly savings targets.

For example:

Estimated safari budget ÷ number of months available = monthly savings target

This makes a large trip easier to manage.

You can also ask a tour operator for an initial quotation. At Traford Safaris, we can use your budget, preferred dates and interests to build a safari around what you can realistically spend.

6–9 Months Before: Choose Your Dates and Route

Now move from general ideas to a specific trip.

Choose:

Travel dates → countries → destinations → activities → accommodation level

This is also the time to consider the season.

Some travellers want dry-season wildlife viewing. Others prefer quieter travel periods or lower-cost options.

If you are planning a Christmas or New Year safari, start even earlier because accommodation and popular activities can become more difficult to arrange around busy travel periods.

6–9 Months Before: Secure Limited-Availability Activities

Some safari experiences have limited spaces.

This is particularly important for gorilla trekking.

In Rwanda, Visit Rwanda states that gorilla trekking permits are limited to eight visitors per gorilla troop per day, with 96 permits available each day across the habituated groups. The official tourism board recommends booking in advance.

If gorilla trekking is central to your 2027 trip, do not build the entire itinerary first and only look for permits at the end.

Check availability early and build the route around your confirmed trekking date.

4–6 Months Before: Confirm Your Safari

By this stage, you should have a much clearer picture of your trip.

This is a good time to confirm:

  • Safari dates
  • Destinations
  • Accommodation
  • Safari vehicle
  • Activities
  • Permits
  • Airport transfers
  • Border crossings for multi-country trips
  • Special dietary or accommodation requirements

If you are travelling across Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya or Tanzania, route planning becomes especially important.

A cheaper-looking itinerary can become less practical if it involves unnecessary backtracking or very long transfers.

2–3 Months Before: Prepare Your Travel Documents

Now move from safari planning to personal preparation.

Check your:

  • Passport validity
  • Visa requirements
  • Travel insurance
  • Vaccination requirements
  • Flight arrangements
  • Emergency contacts
  • Payment arrangements
  • Copies of important documents

Keep digital and physical copies of important travel documents.

If you are visiting more than one East African country, check the entry requirements for each country rather than assuming that one requirement applies everywhere.

1–2 Months Before: Prepare What You Will Take

This is the time to start preparing your safari equipment.

Your packing list may include:

  • Lightweight neutral-coloured clothing
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Sun hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellent
  • Light jacket
  • Binoculars
  • Camera and spare batteries
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Small daypack
  • Personal medication

If you are going gorilla or chimpanzee trekking, add appropriate hiking shoes and clothing that can handle muddy or wet forest conditions.

Do not leave specialised equipment until the last week.

2 Weeks Before: Confirm Everything

Before departure, confirm the practical details of your trip.

Your tour operator should have your final itinerary, accommodation and activity arrangements organised.

You should know:

  • Where you are being picked up
  • Your first night’s accommodation
  • Your guide’s contact details
  • Your safari vehicle arrangements
  • Your activity dates
  • Your departure arrangements

This is also a good time to check the weather forecast and make any final packing adjustments.

How Early Should You Plan Different Types of Safaris?

Safari type Useful planning window
Short Kenya wildlife safari 4–8 months
Tanzania wildlife safari 6–12 months
Uganda wildlife safari 4–8 months
Rwanda wildlife safari 4–8 months
Gorilla trekking safari 6–12+ months
East Africa multi-country safari 8–12+ months
Christmas/New Year safari 9–12+ months
Honeymoon safari 6–12 months

These are planning guidelines rather than fixed booking rules. Availability and prices vary by destination, season, accommodation and activities.
