And bring a small backpack with drinking water and other essentials recommended by your safari operator.

The most important thing is to dress for changing conditions.

Is gorilla trekking difficult in December?

The difficulty depends on the gorilla family’s location on your trekking day.

UWA describes gorilla tracking as requiring moderate fitness, with treks lasting approximately two to seven hours.

That range is important.

You could find the gorillas relatively close to the trailhead.

Or you could spend several hours climbing through steep forest before reaching them.

This is why we recommend allowing more than just the trekking day around your gorilla experience.

After several hours in Bwindi, you may not want another major activity immediately afterward.

A good itinerary gives you time to rest.

Don’t make the mistake of leaving Bwindi immediately after trekking

This is particularly important for Christmas itineraries.

Imagine trekking for five hours in the morning and then immediately starting a long road journey to Entebbe.

Technically, you can travel.

But it may not be the best way to experience Uganda.

Instead, consider spending the night near Bwindi after your trek.

The following day can become a scenic transfer toward Queen Elizabeth National Park, Lake Bunyonyi or another destination, depending on your route.

What can you combine with gorilla trekking in December?

After your gorilla trek, you can move toward Queen Elizabeth National Park for wildlife viewing and possibly a Kazinga Channel boat cruise.

Gorilla trekking + Lake Bunyonyi

If you want something slower after trekking, Lake Bunyonyi offers a very different environment.

You leave the forest behind and arrive among hills, islands and water.

It is a natural place to slow down before continuing your journey.

Gorilla trekking + Kibale

Travellers interested in primates can extend the trip toward Kibale for chimpanzee tracking.

This creates a safari focused heavily on Uganda’s primate diversity.

Gorilla trekking + Queen Elizabeth + Kibale

For travellers with more time, this route creates a richer western Uganda experience.

You can combine chimpanzees, wildlife and mountain gorillas rather than treating gorilla trekking as a standalone activity.

Is December better than other months?

That depends on what you value.

If you want the Christmas holiday atmosphere, December has an obvious advantage.

If you want maximum flexibility with dates and accommodation, other periods may give you more options.

And if your priority is simply seeing gorillas, there is no need to choose December only because someone called it the “best month.”

Gorilla trekking takes place throughout the year.

The forest remains the forest.

The gorillas remain wild.

And weather can never be completely guaranteed.

The better question is:

Does December fit the kind of holiday you want to have?

So, is December a good month for gorilla trekking in Uganda?

Yes.

December can be an excellent month for gorilla trekking in Uganda, especially for travellers who want to combine their trek with a Christmas or New Year holiday.

You should, however, plan around three realities:

Rain is still possible. Bwindi is a rainforest, even during traditionally drier periods.

The trek can be physically demanding. UWA notes that tracking can take two to seven hours depending on conditions and gorilla movements.

Christmas permits should be planned early. Gorilla trekking is permit-based, and availability can determine the rest of your itinerary.

So if you have been dreaming of spending Christmas somewhere completely different, imagine this:

You wake before sunrise.

You leave your lodge with your ranger.

The forest slowly gets darker and greener around you.

You climb higher.

Then your guide signals for silence.

The gorillas are close.

That could be your December Christmas in Uganda.

Instead of waking up to winter weather, you could be watching elephants cross the savannah, tracking mountain gorillas through a rainforest or enjoying a sunset over the African bush.

But there is one question many travellers face:

Should you travel over Christmas 2026, or wait until January 2027?

There is no single answer.

The better choice depends on what you want from your safari, your budget, your preferred travel dates and how flexible you are with accommodation and activities.

For travellers considering Uganda, Rwanda or Kenya, the difference between late December and January is worth understanding before paying a deposit.

Christmas 2026: Why travellers book early

Christmas and New Year are not ordinary travel dates.

For many international travellers, the period from roughly mid-December through the first week of January is one of the easiest times to take a longer holiday. Families have school holidays, employees take annual leave and couples often combine Christmas with a longer African adventure.

That creates a very practical issue.

You are not only competing for safari space with other wildlife travellers. You are travelling during a period when many people are also taking their annual holiday.

This matters particularly if your itinerary includes limited-capacity experiences.

Gorilla trekking is a good example. In Rwanda, gorilla tracking is managed through permits, with visitors assigned to habituated gorilla groups. Rwanda currently advises travellers to book in advance.

The same principle applies when planning a multi-country safari. A particular lodge may have availability, but the lodge you actually want may not.

So if your Christmas safari includes gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, popular safari lodges or specific family rooms, waiting until the last minute can reduce your choices.

But is Christmas more expensive?

Often, Christmas travel can cost more than travelling during quieter periods.

However, the important question is what is included in the price.

A Christmas safari price usually reflects more than park entry or accommodation. Your total cost may include:

• safari vehicle and driver-guide
• accommodation
• park fees
• gorilla or chimpanzee permits
• meals
• transfers
• Christmas or New Year lodge arrangements
• domestic flights, where applicable
• special activities and experiences

This is why comparing two safari quotations simply by their headline price can be misleading.

For example, a cheaper January safari may use different accommodation, fewer activities or a different vehicle category.

When comparing Christmas 2026 with January 2027, ask your safari operator to compare the same itinerary and inclusions.

That gives you a much more useful price comparison.

What happens if you wait until January 2027?

January can appeal to travellers who do not need to travel specifically over Christmas.

You can still experience the wildlife, landscapes and cultural attractions of East Africa without making Christmas Day itself part of the trip.

For some travellers, this creates more flexibility.

Instead of saying:

“We have to travel between December 22 and January 2.”

you might be able to say:

“We can travel any time in January.”

That flexibility can make itinerary planning easier.

You may also have more freedom to adjust the number of nights, accommodation category or route according to your budget.

But January is not automatically a quiet or empty safari month.

Early January still overlaps with the holiday period, so it should not be treated as a guaranteed low-demand window.

What about gorilla trekking in December versus January?

This is where planning becomes more important than simply choosing a month.

Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park offer mountain gorilla trekking throughout the year.

The experience is also not simply about the month on the calendar.

Gorilla trekking takes place in forest environments where conditions can change quickly. Rwanda’s tourism authority recommends sturdy walking shoes, protective clothing and a waterproof jacket because rain can occur during trekking.

So if gorillas are the main reason for your trip, focus first on permit availability and your preferred trekking date.

Then build the rest of the safari around it.

This is especially important for Christmas travel because changing the gorilla date at the last minute can affect your accommodation, transport and entire itinerary.

Christmas has something January cannot quite copy

There is another reason people choose Christmas safari holidays.

The atmosphere.

Imagine spending Christmas morning in the African bush.

You wake up to birds calling outside your lodge. Breakfast is served overlooking the savannah. Later, you head out for a game drive while elephants, antelope and other wildlife continue with their normal day.

Christmas dinner might happen under lanterns, around a lodge fire or overlooking a national park.

The wildlife does not know it is Christmas.

And that is exactly what makes the experience special.

Many safari lodges also arrange festive meals, decorations and special Christmas activities. The exact celebrations vary between properties, so travellers should confirm what their chosen lodge offers before booking.

What January gives you instead

January offers something different: flexibility.

If you are not tied to Christmas Day, you can build your safari around the experiences rather than the holiday itself.

That could mean spending more time in one national park instead of rushing between several.

For example, instead of trying to fit everything into a short Christmas break, you might create a January journey combining:

Kibale → Queen Elizabeth → Bwindi → Lake Bunyonyi

in Uganda, or:

Volcanoes → Nyungwe → Lake Kivu

in Rwanda.

The advantage is not simply seeing more places.

It is having enough time to actually enjoy them.

2. Are you flexible with your dates?

If you can travel outside Christmas and New Year, January 2027 gives you another window to consider.

That flexibility can help when building your itinerary and choosing accommodation.

3. Does your safari include gorilla trekking?

If yes, do not wait simply because you hope January will be easier to book.

Gorilla trekking is a permit-based experience, and Rwanda itself recommends advance booking.

Secure the critical activity first, then build the rest of the safari around it.

The bigger question is not Christmas or January

It is:

What kind of safari do you want to have?

If you want Christmas dinner in the bush, festive lodge experiences and a holiday that feels completely different from home, plan for Christmas 2026.

If your priority is flexibility, a less Christmas-focused atmosphere and the freedom to shape your trip around your interests, January 2027 may suit your travel plans better.

Either way, the best safari is one that gives you enough time to enjoy the destination.

That means avoiding unnecessary backtracking, allowing recovery after long drives and not scheduling a long road transfer immediately before an international flight.

You’ve already seen elephants.

Maybe a lion.

A leopard would be an exciting bonus.

And then someone asks:

“Wait… are there tigers in Africa too?”

It sounds like a perfectly reasonable question.

After all, Africa is home to some of the most famous big cats on Earth. Lions roam the savannah. Leopards disappear into the trees. Cheetahs race across open grasslands.

So where do tigers fit into all of this?

Here’s the surprising answer: you won’t find wild tigers roaming the savannahs of Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania or Rwanda.

Tigers are native to Asia, not Africa. Their natural range stretches across parts of Asia, from the Russian Far East to South and Southeast Asia.

But the story gets more interesting from here.

So, Why Don’t Tigers Live in Africa?

The easiest way to understand this is to go back to where tigers evolved.

The tiger (Panthera tigris) is an Asian big cat. Unlike lions and leopards, whose natural ranges historically extended into both Africa and parts of Asia, tigers developed their wild populations in Asia.

Today, wild tigers survive in a number of Asian countries, including India, Nepal, Bhutan, Russia, China and parts of Southeast Asia.

Africa simply isn’t part of their natural modern range.

And that’s why you won’t be driving through Queen Elizabeth National Park, Murchison Falls, Akagera, the Serengeti, or the Maasai Mara and suddenly come across a tiger crossing the road.

If you do, something has gone very, very wrong with your safari itinerary.

But Africa Has Big Cats. Why Not Tigers?

This is where things get interesting.

Africa already has an impressive collection of big cats.

Lions

The lion is probably the first animal that comes to mind when you picture an African safari.

They live in prides, hunt cooperatively in many situations, and are especially associated with the open savannahs of East Africa.

Leopards

Leopards are another story altogether.

They are powerful, secretive and remarkably adaptable. You might spend hours looking for one before suddenly spotting a spotted coat resting high in a tree.

Cheetahs

Then there are cheetahs.

They look completely different from tigers, but they are another member of the big-cat family and are famous for speed rather than brute strength.

So Africa certainly doesn’t need tigers to have an impressive big-cat lineup.

Then Where Do Tigers Actually Live?

If you’re hoping to see a tiger in the wild, you’ll need to travel to Asia.

The tiger’s present wild range includes countries such as:

• India
• Nepal
• Bhutan
• Bangladesh
• Russia
• China
• Thailand
• Malaysia
• Indonesia

The exact distribution varies between tiger populations, and some historic populations have disappeared entirely. WWF currently describes the tiger as a species whose remaining wild populations are found across Asia.

India, in particular, is one of the most important destinations for wild tiger viewing.

So if someone tells you they’re going on a tiger safari, don’t automatically assume they’re heading to Africa.

They might be heading to India instead.

Could You See a Tiger in Africa at All?

Tigers can be kept in captivity outside their natural range, including in zoos and other facilities.

That is very different from seeing a wild tiger in its natural habitat.

The distinction matters because when we talk about wildlife safaris, we’re talking about animals living within their natural ecosystems.

A wild tiger in Africa would not be a normal safari sighting.

And if you ever see a photograph online claiming to show a wild tiger wandering around an African national park, it’s worth checking the story behind the image before believing it.

What About Zoos and Wildlife Facilities?

This is where many people’s confusion comes from.

You can encounter tigers in captivity in countries far outside their native range.

There are captive tiger populations in different parts of the world, and some facilities keep tigers for conservation, education or other purposes. However, captive tigers should not be confused with wild populations.

The conservation story is particularly important.

Wild tigers remain an endangered species, and conservation organisations continue to focus on protecting their habitat, reducing poaching and supporting tiger populations in their native range.

So, What Big Cats Can You Actually See on an East African Safari?

Now we’re getting to the exciting part.

If you’re travelling to East Africa, you don’t need tigers to have an incredible big-cat experience.

In Uganda

Depending on where you travel, you may encounter lions, leopards and cheetahs, with wildlife experiences varying between destinations.

In places such as Queen Elizabeth National Park and Murchison Falls National Park, your safari can include encounters with some of Africa’s most iconic predators.

And then there is something completely different:

the mountain gorilla.

Not a big cat, obviously.

But definitely one of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters you can have in Africa.

In Kenya

Kenya offers some of East Africa’s best-known opportunities for seeing lions, cheetahs and leopards.

The Maasai Mara is particularly famous for its predator-rich landscapes.

And if you’re travelling during the right season, the Great Migration adds another incredible layer to the experience.

In Tanzania

Tanzania is another major destination for big-cat encounters.

The Serengeti is famous for its huge wildlife populations and predator-prey interactions, while the Ngorongoro ecosystem offers another remarkable setting for wildlife viewing.

In Rwanda

Rwanda might be best known for mountain gorillas, but that’s not the whole story.

Akagera National Park offers a very different safari experience, with savannah landscapes and wildlife including lions and leopards.

So while there are no wild tigers, East Africa certainly isn’t short of predators.

But Wait… Are Lions and Tigers Related?

Yes.

This is another reason people sometimes assume they should find tigers in Africa.

Lions and tigers both belong to the Panthera genus.

They’re close relatives, but they’re different species with different natural ranges.

And there is one fascinating difference between them that surprises many people:

Tigers are generally solitary animals, while lions are famous for living in social groups called prides.

Tigers typically hunt alone and are highly territorial.

Lions, on the other hand, have evolved a much more social lifestyle.

So even though they’re both enormous predators, watching a tiger in Asia and watching a lion pride in East Africa are very different wildlife experiences.

What About the Famous “Tiger Safari”?

If you’ve seen videos of people sitting quietly in a safari vehicle waiting for a tiger to emerge from tall grass, that’s most likely happening in Asia.

Tiger safaris are particularly associated with protected areas in India and other parts of the tiger’s natural range.

African safari and tiger safari are therefore two very different experiences.

African safari = lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, rhinos, buffalo and much more.

Asian tiger safari = tigers, along with the other wildlife found in those ecosystems.

Both are incredible.

They’re just different.

Would a Tiger Ever Naturally Wander Into East Africa?

Under today’s natural distribution, no.

There is no established wild tiger population in East Africa.

Tigers haven’t simply been “hiding” somewhere in the forests of Uganda waiting for someone to discover them.

Their wild populations belong to Asian ecosystems.

And that’s actually part of what makes a safari interesting.

Every destination has its own wildlife story.

You travel to Africa to experience African ecosystems.

You travel to India, Nepal or other tiger-range countries to experience tiger landscapes.

The Big Cat You Should Actually Be Looking For in East Africa

If you’re planning an East African safari and you’re hoping to see a large predator, don’t worry.

You have plenty to look forward to.

You could be watching a lion pride at sunrise.

You might spot a leopard disappearing into the grass.

You could watch cheetahs scanning the plains.

Or you might find yourself completely distracted by something much smaller a jackal, mongoose, serval or colourful bird you weren’t expecting to see.

That’s one of the things we love about safari.

You never completely control what you’re going to see.

And sometimes the animal you weren’t expecting becomes the highlight of the entire trip.

So… Are There Tigers in Africa?

Not in the wild.

Tigers are naturally an Asian species, and their remaining wild populations are found across parts of Asia.

Africa has its own incredible big cats—especially lions, leopards and cheetahs—and each one offers a completely different safari experience.

So if you’re heading to Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya or Tanzania, don’t put “spot a tiger” on your safari checklist.

Put lion, leopard and cheetah instead.

And leave the tigers to Asia.

But Bwindi has another side that many travelers never hear about.

Deep inside this ancient rainforest are waterfalls, forest streams and natural pools formed by the rivers that run through the forest.

One of the best-known examples is found along the Munyaga River Falls trail in Buhoma, where a waterfall drops into a natural pool surrounded by dense rainforest.

It is a completely different way to experience Bwindi.

Instead of searching for gorillas, you follow the sound of running water, walk beneath towering trees, watch birds and monkeys, and eventually reach a beautiful waterfall surrounded by thick vegetation.

So, did you know you can explore natural waterfall pools in Bwindi?

Here is what you need to know before adding this experience to your Uganda safari.

Where Are Bwindi’s Natural Pools?

The natural pools are found around some of the waterfalls and streams within Bwindi’s forest ecosystem.

The Munyaga River Falls in the Buhoma area is one of the better-known waterfall attractions.

The trail begins around the Buhoma park headquarters and follows Bizenga Creek towards the Munyaga River. The trail is approximately 1.5 kilometres and provides opportunities to see forest birds, butterflies and monkeys along the way.

The waterfall itself drops approximately 33 metres, creating a scenic pool below.

The setting is what makes the experience special.

You are surrounded by thick vegetation, moss-covered rocks and the sounds of flowing water.

It feels much more like discovering a hidden rainforest than visiting a conventional tourist attraction.

Are These Swimming Pools?

This is where travelers need to understand the difference.

The pools at the bottom of Bwindi’s waterfalls are natural forest pools, not developed swimming pools.

They do not have changing rooms, poolside facilities, lifeguards or the infrastructure you would find at a hotel.

Although some travel sources describe the pools as places where visitors can take a refreshing splash, UWA’s official visitor information does not currently present Bwindi’s waterfall pools as a general swimming attraction. UWA instead recognises waterfall experiences and guided nature activities within the park.

Therefore, do not arrive expecting a conventional swimming excursion.

If you specifically want to enter the water, ask your guide and park authorities first.

Never enter a natural pool in Bwindi without confirming that it is permitted and safe on the day of your visit.

Water levels can change after rainfall, rocks can become extremely slippery, and natural pools do not have the safety controls found at swimming facilities.

Why Are the Pools So Special?

The beauty of these pools comes from their surroundings.

Bwindi is an ancient Afromontane forest with remarkable biodiversity. The park covers approximately 321 square kilometres and forms part of the Albertine Rift ecosystem.

Water is constantly moving through this landscape.

Streams pass between rocks, small cascades develop along the forest trails and larger waterfalls create pools below them.

The result is a series of small rainforest environments where you may encounter:

• Butterflies
• Frogs
• Forest birds
• Ferns
• Mosses
• Lichens
• Monkeys
• Dense rainforest vegetation

The water also plays an important ecological role.

It provides moisture for the forest and contributes to the network of streams that supports the wider ecosystem.

The Munyaga Waterfall Trail

If you are staying in Buhoma, the Munyaga River Falls trail is one of the experiences worth considering.

The walk follows a forested route towards the falls.

It is not a gorilla trek.

That means you do not need to spend hours searching for a gorilla family.

Instead, the focus is on the forest itself.

Along the way, you may encounter different bird species and primates. The trail also provides an opportunity to appreciate Bwindi’s smaller details that can easily be missed during a gorilla trek.

Eventually, the sound of running water becomes stronger.

Then the forest opens around the waterfall.

The approximately 33-metre cascade creates a dramatic focal point, while the pool below adds to the scenery.

For photographers, this can be one of the most rewarding short walks in the Buhoma area.

Do You Need a Gorilla Permit to Visit the Waterfalls?

No.

A gorilla trekking permit is specifically for gorilla trekking.

You do not need to purchase a gorilla permit simply because you want to experience Bwindi’s waterfalls.

However, this does not mean that you can simply enter the forest independently.

Bwindi is a protected national park managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). Visitors must follow the park’s access and activity requirements.

Nature walks and waterfall experiences should therefore be arranged through the appropriate park authorities or a licensed safari operator.

Do You Need a Guide?

Yes, a guided experience is the sensible option.

Bwindi is called the Impenetrable Forest for a reason.

The terrain can be steep, wet and difficult to navigate.

A local guide knows the established trail, helps visitors navigate the forest and can point out birds, plants, insects and other wildlife that you might otherwise walk past.

A guide also helps you understand the importance of protecting the forest.

This is particularly important when visiting sensitive areas around streams and waterfalls.

Can You Swim in the Natural Pools?

This is the question most travelers will ask.

The honest answer is:

Do not assume that swimming is permitted.

Natural pools can look calm and inviting, but conditions can change quickly.

Heavy rainfall upstream can increase water levels. Rocks around waterfalls can also be slippery. Some pools may have hidden rocks, strong currents or other hazards.

Most importantly, these are natural areas inside a protected ecosystem.

Before entering any water, confirm with your UWA-authorised guide whether it is permitted and safe.

If swimming is not allowed, the experience is still worthwhile.

You can sit near the waterfall, photograph the scenery, listen to the forest and enjoy the atmosphere without entering the water.

In many cases, that is the better way to experience it.

What Should You Bring?

A waterfall walk requires different preparation from a normal sightseeing tour.

1. Good Hiking Shoes

Do not wear ordinary sandals.

The forest floor can be muddy and slippery, particularly after rain.

Choose shoes with good grip.

2. Lightweight Rain Jacket

Bwindi receives rainfall throughout the year.

Even when the morning begins sunny, conditions can change in the forest.

A lightweight waterproof jacket is useful.

3. Waterproof Bag

Protect your phone, camera, passport copies and other electronics.

A small dry bag or waterproof backpack cover is ideal.

4. Insect Repellent

You are entering a rainforest ecosystem.

Insect repellent can make the walk more comfortable.

5. Drinking Water

Carry enough water for the hike.

6. Light Snacks

For longer nature walks, a small snack can be useful.

Remember to carry all rubbish out with you.

7. Camera

Bring one.

The waterfall, forest vegetation, butterflies, birds and streams create excellent photography opportunities.

What If You Want to Swim?

If your main goal is to swim, a lodge swimming pool may be a better and safer option.

Several accommodation properties around Bwindi provide swimming facilities, including properties with heated or plunge pools. For example, Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp in Buhoma has a heated plunge pool.

This gives you the best of both experiences.

You can explore the natural waterfalls during a guided forest walk and return to your lodge for a proper swim.

That is particularly appealing after a demanding gorilla trek.

When Is the Best Time to Visit the Waterfalls?

Bwindi can be visited throughout the year.

However, weather can influence the experience.

During wetter periods, streams and waterfalls can have stronger flows, while trails may become muddier.

The drier months can make hiking conditions easier, although rain remains possible because Bwindi is a rainforest.
