It is a completely different way to experience Bwindi.

Instead of searching for gorillas, you follow the sound of running water, walk beneath towering trees, watch birds and monkeys, and eventually reach a beautiful waterfall surrounded by thick vegetation.

So, did you know you can explore natural waterfall pools in Bwindi?

Here is what you need to know before adding this experience to your Uganda safari.

Where Are Bwindi’s Natural Pools?

The natural pools are found around some of the waterfalls and streams within Bwindi’s forest ecosystem.

The Munyaga River Falls in the Buhoma area is one of the better-known waterfall attractions.

The trail begins around the Buhoma park headquarters and follows Bizenga Creek towards the Munyaga River. The trail is approximately 1.5 kilometres and provides opportunities to see forest birds, butterflies and monkeys along the way.

The waterfall itself drops approximately 33 metres, creating a scenic pool below.

You are surrounded by thick vegetation, moss-covered rocks and the sounds of flowing water.

It feels much more like discovering a hidden rainforest than visiting a conventional tourist attraction.

Are These Swimming Pools?

This is where travelers need to understand the difference.

The pools at the bottom of Bwindi’s waterfalls are natural forest pools, not developed swimming pools.

They do not have changing rooms, poolside facilities, lifeguards or the infrastructure you would find at a hotel.

Although some travel sources describe the pools as places where visitors can take a refreshing splash, UWA’s official visitor information does not currently present Bwindi’s waterfall pools as a general swimming attraction. UWA instead recognises waterfall experiences and guided nature activities within the park.

If you specifically want to enter the water, ask your guide and park authorities first.

Never enter a natural pool in Bwindi without confirming that it is permitted and safe on the day of your visit.

Do You Need a Gorilla Permit to Visit the Waterfalls?

A gorilla trekking permit is specifically for gorilla trekking.

You do not need to purchase a gorilla permit simply because you want to experience Bwindi’s waterfalls.

However, this does not mean that you can simply enter the forest independently.

Day 1 – Arrival Kigali – Kigali Serena Hotel

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be met by Traford Safaris guide, outside the airport arrivals section and transferred to your hotel. Visit the genocide museum and enjoy a city tour of Kigali. Lunch in Kigali. Overnight at Kigali Serena Hotel.

Day 2 – Kigali – Nyungwe National Park – Nyungwe House

After Breakfast at the hotel. Depart to Nyungwe national park. Visit the King’s Museum for a short tour and discovery have lunch and en route via Kigali. After transfer to Nyungwe forest arriving in the early evening. Dinner and overnight at Nyungwe House.

Day 3 – Explore Nyungwe Forest National Park – Chimpanzee Trek – Nyungwe House

You’ll rise early for breakfast as you go off in search of Rwanda’s enigmatic and endangered chimpanzee population. With only four hundred chimpanzees in the country, there’s no guarantee you’ll see chimps during your day’s hike, but your 7 Days Rwanda Safari guide will do all he can to get you a glimpse of our closest relatives in the animal kingdom. Even if you aren’t lucky enough to spot a chimpanzee, the national park is a wonderfully diverse place that you’ll get a chance to explore both in the morning in your hunt for chimpanzees and after lunch. In the afternoon, you’ll go in search of another of the park’s primate residents – the cheeky black and white colobus monkey. These playful primates are an easier hike than the chimpanzees, and you’ll delight in their antics. Overnight at Nyungwe House.

Day 4 – Nyungwe Forest National Park – Lake Kivu (Gisenyi) – Lake Kivu Serena Hotel

The town itself, located only 25km from Uganda boarder, is relatively a small city of about 70,000 people. The constant flow of humanity is quite remarkable. The Town has great views of the surrounding volcanoes. People are very friendly here and although a former Belgian colony (and thus French-speaking), many people speak English here.

Afternoon visit the Ibyiwacu cultural village. Dinner and overnight at Gorilla’s Nest Lodge.
